TCM and Acupuncture Courses

 

CCM West London Clinic is affiliated to the College of Chinese Medicine (CCM) London and runs professional training, as well as CPD courses in TCM, acupuncture, acupressure massage and other therapeutic aspects of Oriental medicine. All the courses are taught part-time (weekends) in small groups with a lot of personal supervision and guidance. Emphasis is firmly placed on professional education based in clinical practice, where theoretical understanding, practical skills and attitudinal development underpin every aspect of the learning and teaching process.

The College of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1992. It was established to promote the development and education of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies in the United Kingdom, and to preserve and further develop its professional standing and integration into modern health care practice. The College is dedicated to the education of high calibre Acupuncture & TCM professionals who are proficient in modern western medical sciences as well as traditional Chinese theory.

Acupressure Massage Diploma Course

The course is based on seven sessions (Sundays) spread over 4-5 months. The classes are held on 7 Sundays 9.30am-5.30pm in our West London College Clinic. The address is: Hogarth Youth Centre, Duke Road, Chiswick, London W4 2JR.

The course is designed as an advanced, intensive course for massage therapists and other physical therapists that want to broaden their knowledge and further their skills. The emphasis of the course falls on the practical application of acupressure massage as treatment for variety of musculo-skeletal conditions.

The course includes a general theoretical part – the first three sessions, providing sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Acupuncture Meridian System and the points used in acupressure for common musculo-skeletal problems, as well as practical diagnosis of common pathology and therapeutic principals of TCM and acupressure. The remainder of the course covers the specific treatment for each of the different areas of the body with demonstration, explanation and individual practical work.

Successful graduates will be awarded a Diploma in Acupressure Massage and will be  accepted as members of the Acupuncture Society and will be entitled to use the initials Dip Ap after their names upon joining the Acupuncture Society.

 

Advanced 3-day acupuncture meridian stretch course

The course is based on three 7.5-hour sessions over a three day weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). It is designed as a postgraduate advanced CPD course for acupuncture, massage and other physical therapists and personal trainers who want to broaden their knowledge and further their skills. The course is also suitable for athletes, martial artists and anyone with an interest in sport and fitness, who wants to deepen his/hers understanding of the function of the musclulo-skeletal (MSK) system and enhance their training.

The course includes a two-day theoretical part and a one-day practical session. The first theory session covers the principle concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the Acupuncture meridian system, focusing on the precise pathways of the meridians in respect to the skeletal muscles, as well as the specific functions of the different meridian muscle groups. The second-day session of the course covers the different functional types of stretching and their underlying physiological mechanisms. It focuses on the practical application of the principles and methods of stretching in the regulation of the acupuncture meridians and their respective muscles. The third practical session covers specific stretches for each of the different areas of the body with demonstration, explanation and individual practical work.

All students who complete the course are issued with Acupuncture meridian stretch attendance certificate, which counts as 22.5 hours towards CPD.

 

2 Day Diploma course in Auricular acupuncture for drug and alcohol withdrawal and stress management

The Auricular acupuncture is a two-day Diploma course designed for health professional working in the drug rehabilitation field, as well as other therapist who want to broaden their knowledge and enhance their skills in treating stress conditions. The course centres on a specialised treatment that is used to control withdrawal symptoms of tension, irritability, hypersensitivity, anxiety, depression and other states of nervous imbalance. Auricular acupuncture is a powerful therapeutic technique, which can be used as a stand-alone treatment for drug, nicotine and alcohol withdrawal as well as general stress. It makes a perfect add-on protocol as part of both physical (acupuncture, massage, manipulation therapy) and psychotherapy/counselling treatments.

The emphasis of the course falls on the practical application of auricular acupuncture in alcohol and drug rehabilitation – how to locate the ear points, and how to needle them. There is a theoretical lecture during the first session, which covers basic anatomy of the ear, general concept of TCM and auricular therapy, health and safety issues and contraindications for auricular acupuncture. The remainder of the course concentrates on practical work – accurately selecting, locating and needling the auricular points used in withdrawal and stress management. Developing good acupuncture technique will enable students to practice in this specialised area of auricular therapy with confidence.

Successful students will be accepted as Auricular Therapy Members of the Acupuncture Society, and will be entitled to use the initials MAcSAu after their names.

 

Auricular Acupuncture for Musculo-skeletal conditions and pain management 4-Day Diploma Course

The course is a level-2 Auricular acupuncture course and is open for level-1 Auricular therapists with sufficient (ITEC level 3 or equivalent) Anatomy & Physiology knowledge and interest in MSK medicine. It is also suitable for acupuncture, massage and other physical therapists who want to broaden their knowledge and further their skills.The course is based on 4 7-hour sessions and further 42 hours home study. The emphasis of the course falls on the practical application of auricular acupuncture for MSK pain conditions – how to locate the ear points and how to needle them.

This is a level-2 auricular acupuncture course. It includes a short theoretical lecture during the first session, which covers basic anatomy of the ear, general concepts of TCM and auricular therapy, health and safety issues and contraindications for auricular acupuncture.

The remainder of the course concentrates on practical work – accurately selecting, locating and needling the auricular points used for MSK pain conditions.  Developing good acupuncture technique will enable students to practice in this specialised area of auricular therapy with confidence.

Successful students will be eligible for membership of the Acupuncture Society as Auricular Members and will be entitled to use the initials MAcS Au MSK after their names.

Sports and Orthopaedic Acupuncture Diploma Course

This is a post-graduate course composed of 12 one-day modules. Each of the modules is designed as a specific CPD unit, so the whole course can be completed as an accumulation of the individual modules over one or more years.

The course is specifically designed as an advanced, intensive course for acupuncturists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other physical therapists, who wish to broaden their knowledge and further their skills. The emphasis of the course falls on the practical application of acupuncture as a treatment for a variety of musculo-skeletal conditions.

The course includes a general theoretical section, comprising four modules, which serves as a foundation for the specific clinical section modules, and is essential for any non-acupuncture practitioner. The theoretical section is designed to provide sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Acupuncture Meridian System, the points commonly used for musculo-skeletal problems, as well as TCM pathogenesis, pathology and principles and methods of diagnosis and treatment. It also includes training in needle puncturing, manipulation, moxibustion and cupping, as well as exercises, stretches and other aspects of physical therapy. The remainder of the course comprises area-specific clinical modules, which cover the problems and respective treatments for each of the different areas of the body (i.e. upper back and neck; shoulder; etc.). Each one of these modules is a complete unit in its own right and can be taken as a separate CPD course.

Successful graduates will be awarded a Diploma in Orthopaedic Acupuncture and will be entitled to use the initials Dip OA after thier names and will be accepted as a members of the Acupuncture Society.

 

TCM MUSCULO-SKELETAL MEDICINE DIPLOMA COURSE

This is a part-time weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) professional training course composed of seven individual modules.

Each of the therapy modules is either designed as a specific CPD unit or a Diploma course in its own right, and the whole TCM Musculo Skelital Diploma Course is completed as an accumulation of the individual modules over one or more years.

The course is specifically designed as an advanced, intensive course for acupuncturists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other physical and sports therapists, who wish to broaden their knowledge and further their skills.

The emphasis of the course falls on the acupuncture (body and auricular), acupressure and stretching practical application of TCM and meridian theory in the treatment of a variety of common musculo-skeletal conditions. Functional anatomy, pathology, dissection, and imaging and palpation diagnosis form an integral part of the course.

The course includes a general TCM and acupuncture theoretical section, which serves as a foundation for the clinical section modules, and is essential for any non-acupuncture practitioners.  The theoretical section is designed to provide sufficient knowledge and understanding of the Acupuncture Meridian System, the points commonly used for musculo-skeletal problems, as well as TCM pathogenesis, pathology and principles and methods of diagnosis and treatment. It also includes training in needle manipulation, moxibustion and cupping, as well as exercises, stretches and other aspects of physical therapy.

The main part of the course comprises five practical modules – acupressure massage; body orthopaedic acupuncture; auricular MSK pain acupuncture; stretching and anatomy, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of the low and upper back/neck, shoulder and knee and meridian stretching. The clinical modules cover the most common MSK problems of these areas of the body and their respective acupressure massage, acupuncture and stretching treatments.

The course also includes a three-day dissection module covering the upper and lower extremities and trunk of the body, which will help experience and appreciate the reality of the MSK structures in respect to their palpation diagnosis and their relation to the acupuncture meridians and points. A two-day MSK imaging module will provide an introduction to MRI- and Ultrasound-based diagnosis of common MSK pathology of the extremities and back/neck.

Each one of these modules is a complete unit in its own right and can be taken as a separate Diploma or CPD course. Upon successfully completing each module, students are given a Certificate of attendance or a Diploma, depending on the module. After students complete all modules in the course, they are awarded a Diploma certificate in Traditional Chinese Musculo-skeletal Medicine and are entitled to become TCM MSK members of the Acupuncture Society (www.acupuncturesociety.org.uk) and use the initials MAcSMSK after their names.

 

One day CPD seminars and workshops

This is a one day seminar/workshop (10am-5pm) for acupuncture, massage and other physical and sports therapists and personal trainers who want to deepen their knowledge of the function, pathology and diagnosis of the musculo-skeletal system. It is designed to fulfil the requirements for CPD as set by the Acupuncture Society and other professional organisations. The seminar covers the principle musculo-skeletal anatomy in relation to the Acupuncture meridians and the common pathological patterns of the area, focusing on  their aetiology, diagnosis and treatment, as well as palpation diagnosis of the different muscles in the area, their common trigger points and acupuncture points stimulation. There are 4 CPD seminars covering the principle areas of the body and their most common pathologies – Low back; Upper back and neck; Shoulder; and Knee.
